On Sin and Foregiveness

My wife and I attend a weekly class at church in which we read and discuss various books. During last night’s class there was a discussion on sin and specifically how difficult it is to understand that all sins carry the same weight to God. It can be hard to imagine that someone who shoplifted a candy bar is no better than a serial killer, especially if your life was affected by the sins of the serial killer. The Catholic church has the mortal sins, which are considered the worst of all sins, but most church’s will simply say that a sin is a sin. As we discussed this an illustration came to mind that I’d like to share to the broader audience.

The Cups Analogy

Let’s say that at birth God gives each of us a cup and the simple instruction to keep it empty and dry. For the sake of argument, we’ll say that this cup hold 16oz, but that doesn’t matter so much. When we sin, in this scenario, water is poured into the cup and we must ask God to forgive us allowing our cup to get wet. Of course, God will give us a parent-like smile, dump out the cup, wipe it dry, and hand it back to us with a “ok, but remember, don’t let your cup get wet.” This is sin and forgiveness.

Now, let’s discuss the magnitude of sins and whether all sins are created equal. If we go with the assumption that sins are ranked by badness, then the worse sins would pour more water into the cup than the more forgivable ones. To use the examples from above, stealing is equal to a 1qt container of water and murder is equal to a gallon. When we commit the sin, the appropriate container is poured into our cup, but since our cup holds only 16oz, both the stealing and the murder would fill the cup to overflowing, leaving the same amount of water for which we must ask forgiveness. Did you listen to the instructions carefully? Even a drop of sin would make the cup wet, so any amount sin requires equal forgiveness from God. The point is that whether one sin is worse than another is irrelevant, since any sin fills our cup.

We each go through life with our cup to carry and keep dry. We shouldn’t worry ourselves with ranking sins by how much they offend us. We shouldn’t look at someone on death row and think, well at least I’m not that bad. We must instead remember that any amount of sin, no matter the offense, violates the expectations God has set for us and requires equal forgiveness. That’s good news, there’s hope for you and there’s hope for me, because no matter how much or how often we screw up, God has his dish towel ready.

Hello Mr. Larkin. I am responding only to your "Faith" blog, and saw your note that you invited people to share with you regarding what you write on your blog. I hope you will take what I have to say in "peace," and not with a proud heart, or lord-it-over attitude...it is not meant that way at all. My reply to your blog article is quite lengthy, so I hope you will excuse my long-windedness, but I believe what I have to say cannot be said in a shorter manner. Well, then again, it probably could, but you're a techie, and I'm a typist, and so typing is what I enjoy doing, so...that being said, here is what I wanted to share with you regarding "Sins and Forgiveness." I put quite a few of the scripture verses down...but as it is very late, my brain couldn't pull them all out, but would be glad to furnish them if you are not already familiar with the quote. I just don't want you to think that I'm talking out of my own beliefs... when I am quoting from God's word...and not my own word. So, that being said, here is my reply....meant to encourage...and I hope you take it that way. Please read all the way through, also, before you damn me to hell....lol (There are some people out there today who would rather do that, you know, than to have someone expound on something they said, or disagree with it, etc...they can't have ANY debate....other side of the story, etc....I hope you're not that way.) Here are the thoughts that came to my mind immediately after reading your article:

Christ already died for sins ONCE...and for ALL....and that God was in Christ, reconciling the WORLD to Himself, NOT counting men's sins against them (2 Cor. 5:19-20). We're told that God has removed man's sin as far as the east is from the west. He died for His ENEMIES, not people who are already born again believers. He died for those who had no use for Him. When asked what they could do to do the WORKS OF GOD, Jesus said, "The WORK of God is to believe on the One He has sent." He also said, "The WORLD'S SIN....SIN....is unbelief in Me." He didn't name the dirty 12...it was ONE SIN that caused Adam to DIE Spiritually. God told him and Eve something, and they didn't BELIEVE Him. In Deuteronomy 18, we're told that He would send a Savior from the Jews...and if you don't listen to what He says, it will be required of you." In Genesis 5 it says that Adam was created in God's image; But Seth was born in ADAM'S. God's Spirit had departed from his creation...but He said He would RESTORE HIS SPIRIT...HIS LIFE....to mankind (EZEKIEL 36:26). Jesus said, "I am the Way, the Truth, and THE LIFE;" "I am the Resurrection and THE LIFE;" "I came that they should have LIFE, and have it ABUNDANTLY." Jesus had to bypass that fallen line in order to not be born in ADAM'S IMAGE...empty. He was called the LAST ADAM....in the Likeness of the FIRST ADAM (Romans 6; I Cor. 15). Paul said that without the resurrection we're all to be PITIED. Paul said that AFTER the cross had occurred. So, if the cross itself saves, then what did Paul mean? Why would we be pitied? The truth is that we focus on the cross, and the early church focused on THE RESURRECTION, and THE LIVING CHRIST. Romans 5:10 says that "While we were yet ENEMIES, Christ died for us...how much more shall we be saved BY HIS LIFE." In I Cor. 15:45 we're told HE BECAME A LIFE-GIVING SPIRIT. In Colossians 1:27 we're told, "Christ IN you is your only hope of glory!" I'm saying all of this because today's church has focused so much on "what Christ has already taken away," instead of THE LIVING CHRIST who is not holding their SINS against them...and now He says, "be reconciled..." He's already reconciled mankind on His side...but we're told by Paul that we're enemies IN OUR MINDS. Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away THE SINS OF THE WORLD...not just of believers. We're saved by the LIFE OF CHRIST coming within...not by the death of Christ. In fact, Christ died on the Jewish "Day of preparation." He was PREPARING THE VESSELS as one prepares jars for canning. He was sterilizing them, so that He could then FILL THEM if they opened the door, and heeded His call...and then He would then SEAL THEM...with His Holy Spirit. (John 20:22). For years people have quoted I John 1:9 as a "confess your sins to God" to GET FORGIVENESS....and they're taking that entire book out of context. In fact, if we read a concordance, or the title page in a particular bible, it says that John was dealing with men who didn't believe TWO THINGS...#1...that God came in the flesh; they didn't believe it because they believed matter was evil, therefore He would never inhabit a human body; #2, they did not believe they were sinners. This is the definition of the men they were dealing with. If you read the verse right before I John 1:9 it says, "if we say WE HAVE NO SIN...we are DECEIVING OURSELVES...and the TRUTH (Who's the Truth?) is not in us. v. 10 - If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins, and to CLEANSE US FROM.....ALL......UNRIGHTEOUSNESS. Not "some" but "all." If you continue to I John chapter 2 it reiterates the truth FOR THOSE WHO HAVE ALREADY ACKNOWLEDGED THEIR SINFULNESS, AND HAVE RECEIVED HIS LIFE....I John 2:12, "I am writing to you, little children, because your sins ARE FORGIVEN YOU for His names sake." In I John 2:2...it says that He was the propitiation for our sins, and NOT OURS ONLY...BUT ALSO FOR THOSE OF THE WHOLE WORLD." This is important... because if that's true...then we'll have to say, "Is the whole world saved?" Of course not...but RECONCILIATION is NOT RECEIVING LIFE. You can have a cleansed jar...and have it still remain UNFILLED...which is what Jesus says in John chapter 3... if they are not born again, they have been JUDGED ALREADY. Why? Because the whole world was judged in Adam...His death trickled down to the whole world. We weren't there...but he could not pass on GOD'S SPIRIT WITHIN. And God created us as Jars, tents, houses, vessels, temples...we were made to REFLECT THE INVISIBLE IMAGE OF GOD from within. It's HIS IMAGE. The fruit of THE SPIRIT...not our fruit. He's the Vine... we are the branches who bear the sap from the Vine. And that Sap is the UNCONDITIONAL LOVE AND ACCEPTANCE OF GOD. We're told to GROW IN.....GRACE.....and in the knowledge of Him. You cannot grow in grace when your eyes are on your sinfulness...and keeping your cup clean. You will spend an entire lifetime trying to keep your cup clean, but PAUL GLORIED IN HIS WEAKNESS...because when HE was weak...THEN he was strong. Mankind's sin is "pride" thinking they can do things THEMSELVES...as if they don't NEED God within to do it through them. But GOD is our STRENGTH...we're told that the FLESH AVAILETH NOTHING. The flesh NEVER GETS GOOD...and trying to make it do what is right is to "mimic" an historical Jesus, instead of letting A LIVING, RISEN, CHRIST...WITHIN...DO WHAT HE WOULD DO. We are not told to mimic HIM...His actions. In John 17 we're told that we will finally understand that the Father was IN Him...and He was IN the Father...and, likewise, you will be IN Me...and I will be IN you.... In other words, Jesus came to show us THE TEMPLATE OF HOW ORIGINAL MAN WAS CREATED; and He told us as well, "I do nothing unless the Father IN Me tells me to do it;" "I say nothing unless THE FATHER IN ME tells Me to say it." Likewise, Paul tells us that it is NOT US WHO LIVES....but Christ Who lives in us." (Galatians 2:20)...and He tells us in Romans 6:2 that WE HAVE DIED TO SIN. So, I always wondered..."God? If I died to sin, why am I told to FOCUS on it?" "God? If it's NOT I WHO LIVE...why are my eyes always on MYSELF?" I was told to keep my eyes on CHRIST, the Author & Perfecter of my faith. And then I was told in Hebrews 10:14 that I've already been MADE PERFECT...FOREVER! We're told that it's THE GRACE of God that teaches us to say NO to unrighteousness. If the Law worked, then we had no need for a NEW covenant. There was nothing wrong with the law, but all it did for mankind was show him HE WAS DEAD SPIRITUALLY and COULDN'T HACK IT. But mankind is always throwing it up in God's face..."Well I never committed murder!!!" But Jesus has to knock the self-righteousness away..."But God says if you've even been angry with your brother you've committed murder!" "But I never committed adultery!" "But God says if you've even lusted after a woman, you've committed adultery!" "Go sell all you have and follow me!" The man walked away...he had a problem with coveting. But he, at first, threw HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS in Jesus' face. The NEW COVENANT did not go into effect until the day the One who made it DIED, as Hebrews tells us. So Christ taught UNDER THE JEWISH LAW...and the NEW COVENANT began in Acts. Although the bible is GOD-BREATHED...the verse #'s and title pages are not. Mankind put the "New Covenant" title page in...and that is what is confusing so many people. How can you put together the verse where Jesus says, "If you don't forgive, you won't be forgiven!" and Paul who says in the NEW Covenant, "Forgive AS YOU'VE BEEN FORGIVEN." Jesus said you can't put NEW WINE into OLD wineskins. Hebrews says the NEW is not like the OLD. Ephesians tells us that the GENTILES didn't even have the law...they were far from God and the Covenants of God. The Jews were near. The Jews are the "circumcision"... the Gentiles, "the uncircumcision." Paul says in Ephesians that it was THE LAW that put ENMITY between the two peoples. So God tore down the wall of enmity (The Law) and is making ONE NEW MAN. So here, Paul was telling the Jews that the Law was not given to make them right with God, but to lead them to Christ, and yet today, we see churches leading the sheep to THE LAW. A law that Paul said in Galatians 3 "Could not GIVE LIFE." Salvation is a LIFE and DEATH issue. God is INVISIBLE...Romans 1 says, and must be understood THROUGH what HE HAS MADE. He must have BODY to be seen...so He gave His LIFE for us; to GIVE His LIFE to us; to live HIS LIFE through us. Our ministry Paul said is the ministry of RECONCILIATION....in 2 Cor. 5:19...we're told to go out and tell the world that God was in Christ reconciling the WORLD to Himself...NOT...NOT....NOT...counting their SINS against them. Christ took them away...there is NO MORE SACRIFICE FOR SIN... and even our confession is made into a SACRIFICE...yet Hebrews tells us that God was not happy with the sacrifices they offered in the old covenant...but only the body of Christ. And it doesn't say that "confession" forgives sins...it says, "Without the shedding of blood THERE IS NO FORGIVENESS OF SINS." Christ died ONCE....for ALL. So there are two factors operating here. One is RECONCILIATION...the other RECEIVING LIFE...CHRIST'S LIFE, AND LETTING HIM LIVE IT THROUGH His creatures.

When we understand God's total love, forgiveness, grace, in all its fullness...then it's that LOVE that motivates us to live FOR HIM. Everything else is a dead work. The bible says we can have everything...and if we don't have LOVE...then we have nothing. Faith, hope, and love...but the most important is LOVE. Love is patient...kind...KEEPS NO RECORD OF WRONGS. God is LOVE....so He is not keeping a record of our wrongs. Rejoice! With the GOOD NEWS! The gospel is GOOD NEWS...not bad news. I always ask people...is the gospel you heard "good" news? Jesus said, "Come to Me all who are WEARY...and HEAVY LADEN...I'll give YOU...YOU....YOU....REST. Are YOU resting? Are you weary or heavy laden? If we are, the we're operating with ERROR...because Jesus said, "The TRUTH...sets us FREE." Free. Free. And the angel said to those tending their flocks, "Do not be afraid, for I bring you GOOD NEWS....OF GREAT JOY...which shall be for ALL the people....the whosoever will's. Open the door, and HE WILL COME IN (Rev. 3:21)...and give you HIS LIFE....and Paul said, "For me to live IS CHRIST!" His eyes weren't on HIMSELF, or HIS SIN, for he knew it was gone. When Christ said "It is Finished"...he BELIEVED. If you read Galatians...it shows that Paul said, to not believe is to trample underfoot the cross of Christ. HE TOOK IT ALL AWAY HAVING NAILED IT TO THE CROSS! We have a lot of DOUBLE TALK going on in the church today. They say, "Come down and get YOUR SINS FORGIVEN!" And the next day they tell them to start counting up their sins!...and asking for them to BE FORGIVEN... when they were just told THEY WERE FORGIVEN. It is CONFUSING the flock! GRACE.....unconditional love and forgiveness....a done deal....is THE SAP. Not keeping our cups cleansed....dry. That is an exercise in futility. When I have people say to me, "I'm at the end of my rope!" I say, "Good...grease that sucker....you're ready for GRACE!" And not before. God will bring you to the END of yourself. Just look at J. Hudson Taylor...the missionary who went to China to evangelize China FOR God! He got there, and fell into the most horrendous sin imaginable...yet he LOVED God truly. Finally, a friend helped him to understand that God hadn't called him to do ANYTHING...but to just be AN AVAILABLE CLEANSED FILLED VESSEL...and God would do it THROUGH him. That took the EXPECTATIONS OFF OF HIM...and put them on God. And, as Major Ian Thomas always said, "God is BIG ENOUGH FOR THE JOB!" Our God is too small.... It's ALL OF HIM...and NONE of us. God will NOT share His glory with another. David was a murderer and adulterer. Solomon worshipped foreign gods; Lot slept with his daughters; Abraham gave his wife to the King as his sister; Paul took christians to be killed. God was NOT counting their SINS against them! Jesus is a FRIEND TO SINNERS. Until we glory in OUR WEAKNESS...we will not NEED HIS GRACE! We wouldn't give HIM the time of day if He didn't leave our weaknesses in us. He could have taken them away, but He didn't. Our life is one of DEPENDENCE upon THE ONE WHO CAN. We can't...and the sooner we come to understand that, the sooner we'll rest from OUR WORKS...(even the WORK of keeping our cups cleansed.) God bless. Would love to discuss if you would like. Grace and peace to you.
  • It is not fair to say that God sees all sins equally. The Bible never states that. In fact, the Bible calls some sins abominations and other sins it does not.

Perhaps it is so difficult for us to understand that all sins carry the same weight with God, as you and your wife concluded, because it is an illogical conclusion. For instance, sinning in deed is obviously worse than sinning in thought. If I think about stealing from you, it is not as wrong as if I actually do it. Both are sins, sure, but how are these equally evil?

Take Herod as an example. He did many wicked things in his life, but the Bible says that above all those is when he shut up John in prison. If God sees all of Herod's sins as equal, why would it say that this was his worst one?

I believe the point that you are trying to make is correct; that God's grace is great enough to forgive ALL sins, regardless of their magnitude. But equal forgiveness? I don't think so. See Luke 7:41-43

    In Christ,
    Jerod
